Having an Eeyore Mentality
Poor Eeyore. He’s the constantly depressed donkey in Winnie the Pooh. He always sees the glass as half empty. He’s probably one of the most pessimistic fictional characters there is. Despite his cuteness level, he’s always down in the dumps.
Have you ever felt like Eeyore? Do you always feel down in the dumps, like life is passing you by and that you are just a spectator and not a participant? Is your glass half empty all the time? Do you always see the cloud and never the silver lining?
In God’s view, you might be as adorable as Eeyore, and He loves you, but you are His valued masterpiece, His special creation. God sees you as something truly special. You are His crowning achievement. Never mind the moon and the stars. Your value far surpasses everything else in this world.
Truly, God loves the Eeyore’s as well as the Winnie the Pooh’s and He values us all the same. We all have a special place in His heart.
In Ephesians 2:10 (KJV), Paul writes, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Sometimes it can be hard to see our inherent value when we are in the midst of depression or anxiety. Having an Eeyore mentality is a real sickness. Depression is a disease that affects millions of people. While the stigma surrounding it has lessened over the years, people can still be filled with shame that they have it and that it can have a major effect on their everyday lives.
I get it. As someone who has lived with depression over the years, I’ve been able to manage it with the help of medication. I still have my “Eeyore days” when I feel blue and that my glass is half empty. Thankfully, these days are far and few between. My life in Christ has shown me the value and worth I have as His beloved child. Even if I was a perpetual Eeyore, He would still love and value me.
God’s love for us never changes. The way He values us never changes. It’s what’s inside of us that has to change. Even in our struggles, we must take hold of the fact that God says we are His masterpiece and that He created us to do good works for Him. It took me many years to see this about myself. I never believed I was worth anything to anybody, until the Lord showed me otherwise. I’ve gained the confidence in myself because I know how much I mean to Him. And you do too.
Please be encouraged that God loves you so much. You are truly His workmanship, His masterpiece. When Jesus held out His arms on the cross as He died, He was putting His arms around you. He was letting you know how much He loves you and that you are truly special, wonderful, valued, and unique!
